Westfood Processing Export Joint Stock Company (Westfood) has just signed a cooperation agreement with Dak Lak Rubber Joint Stock Company (Dakruco) to expand the MD2 pineapple raw material area in the Central Highlands to meet the growing demand of the market.
According to the agreement just signed in 2022, Westfood will supply MD2 pineapple seedlings to Dakruco with an area of 60 to 85 hectares, and it will consume all output grown in the form of fresh fruits.
After 2022, Dakruco will develop MD2 pineapple planting area up to nearly 300 hectares, and Westfood will provide seeds and consume all the output.
With this cooperation in 2023, Westfood will supplement over 2,600 tons of MD2 pineapple raw materials for production and business activities. This output will increase in the following years and may reach 13,317 tons/year.
In 2014, Westfood was the first unit in Vietnam to put MD2 pineapple variety into trial cultivation in Vietnam on an area of 4 hectares. After 18 months, MD2 pineapple field produced the first products with unexpected quality: even fruit, thin skin, large weight 1.8 – 2kg, rich sweet taste, and fragrant yellow body.
The good news is that MD2 pineapples are both higher in quality and productive than native ones. According to the calculation, 1 hectare of MD2 pineapple under the model that Westfood provides seeds and consumes products, after deducting all costs, people will have an income of 80 million VND/year, and plus the caring work, it will be up to 110 million VND/year. With these advantages, Westfood has built a raw material area of nearly 100 hectares in the Mekong Delta provinces.
Thanks to the model of seed supply, technical support, and product consumption, hundreds of hectares of MD2 pineapples are being grown in the Mekong Delta, bringing a stable source of income for people.
The market of MD2 pineapple is mainly focused on Japan, Korea, and Australia to reduce competition of MD2 pineapple varieties in Costa Rica and Honduras (Central America). Besides, the company also set a strategy to develop the domestic market. In 2020, the company succeeded in bringing MD2 to the chain of high-end fruit stores such as Farmers Market and Nam An Market in Ho Chi Minh City.
In 2021 and beyond, the company has put products into the chain of convenience stores and foreign supermarkets in Vietnam such as Aeon or Lotte Mart nationwide with fresh pineapple products and processed products with added value such as canned pineapple, rapid freezing of IQF.

In addition to cooperating in the development of MD2 pineapple raw material area, Westfood and Dakruco also consider developing more raw material areas for short-term agricultural products such as cucumbers, sweet corns, tomatoes, peppers … on an area of about 15-20 hectares to create more material stability for the factories in the off-season times of the main crop and supply to the existing markets of West Foods.
